The Hsinchu City Juvenile Correctional Institution's training ground was completed in 1935. Nearby are 18 dormitory buildings, a combination of Western-style steel and wood structures topped with Japanese-style black tiles and high-pitched roofs. The training ground was formerly used by prison officers for martial arts and physical training, including judo and kendo. After World War II, it was converted into staff quarters and subsequently left vacant. In 2012, it was designated a municipal historic site, but the main building was covered by a roof, prompting a restoration project. It officially opened to the public in November 2021. After the restoration, the training ground features two main exhibitions. The permanent exhibition, "Martial Arts‧Rebirth," presents the space of the juvenile correctional institution and related prison history, preserving many original wooden structures, doors, windows, and floors. These relics reveal many old stories and are well worth exploring. The special exhibitions broadly showcase the development and stories of the city's historic sites, hoping to allow the public to learn about the history of this rare prison settlement in Taiwan through historical sites and exhibitions. Hsinchu Juvenile Correctional Institution, Taiwan's first prison specifically for juveniles, primarily housed male inmates under the age of 20. Established in 1926 during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, it was located in Xinfu Town, Hsinchu City. After World War II, it was converted into Hsinchu Prison, and some of the surrounding buildings have been preserved, while the main building has undergone several renovations. The Hsinchu Juvenile Correctional Institution's drill ground (a designated municipal historic site of Hsinchu City), completed in 1935, is located in the government housing complex to the east of the correctional facility. According to the explanations provided by on-site personnel, the north side of the Hsinchu Juvenile Correctional Institution houses a sports field, a swimming pool, and the Gounai Shrine. The Gounai Shrine was established in 1937, and its relocation ceremony was held on May 1st of the same year.

1. The collaboration with the National Taiwan University of Arts was really cool! The VR shamanistic dance performance was amazing! Very memorable! Thank you to the students of the National Taiwan University of Arts and the Hsinchu Cultural Affairs Bureau for their meticulous planning. 2. The guides were very professional. They explained many detailed aspects, including the architectural design, historical background, and reasons behind it. I highly recommend everyone come! 3. My only suggestion: The location of the entrance is a bit odd. I suggest putting a "This is not the main entrance" sign on the red door, otherwise people might think it's closed!

Restoration work has begun on the surrounding government housing complex, which looked like a haunted house. There are quite a few buildings, so it should be quite a sight to see once it's finished. I'm looking forward to it (even though it's 5 years away).
